Learn, create, lead
TUMO Bilbao-Bizkaia
TUMO is a new educational experience that combines technology and design, driven by Fundación ”la Caixa”, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, and the City Council of Bilbao.
At TUMO, teenagers take an active role in their own learning process, developing key skills for their future. They participate in self-learning spaces, workshops, and laboratories that provide them with a personalized, innovative, and interdisciplinary experience.
TUMO is a free-of-change, extracurricular and in-person education program.
Learning Objectives
Workshops are led by specialists who guide young people across different disciplines. Participants can choose 4 of the 8 disciplines offered and progress through different levels by completing practical projects, ultimately creating a personal portfolio to publish, share, or present.
Animation
The goal of TUMO’s animation workshop is to teach students the concept of movement and the idea that animation can bring static images to life and serve as an effective tool for storytelling and addressing important topics.
By the end of this learning area, you will have a solid foundation to continue animating and refining your skills. You will be able to apply your knowledge in 3D animation, stop motion, and all types of animation.
Game Development
The goal of TUMO’s game development workshop is to teach students how to create playable and complex 3D games, with a focus on user experience. By combining level design and programming, students are encouraged to think critically about how players move through the game and interact with the interface.
This fosters a deep understanding of game development, where students not only learn how to create levels and code, but also how to design engaging game experiences that keep players interested.
Music
In the Music learning area, we work with 21st-century music. You will learn about music studios, explore different genres, become familiar with classical and electronic instruments, and work on songwriting and composition.
To do this, you will use the professional software Logic Pro, an industry standard in music production. You will take on the roles of sound engineer, composer, and music producer, and complete this learning path by creating your own song.
Filmmaking
TUMO’s film workshop focuses on the art of visual storytelling and crafting compelling narratives. We guide students to understand that filmmaking is not just about telling a story to an audience, but about showing it. By the end of the course, you will have designed, produced, filmed, and edited your own short film. You will gain knowledge of filmmaking fundamentals and hands-on experience in planning, shooting, editing, and more.
Programming
In this learning path, you will learn everything you need to enter the world of programming. You will discover how to control variables, create and manage functions, and manipulate different elements of code.
You will learn to develop server-based applications, understand the concept of version control, and use tools such as Git or Bitbucket.
As a final project, you will create your own “Game of Life” and take on advanced programming challenges, exploring different solutions that, in some cases, will also require the use of mathematical skills.
Robotics
Robotics at TUMO goes beyond simply learning new technologies. Young people develop key critical and analytical thinking skills while exploring their creative side through the programming of mobile robots.
Throughout the two levels of this learning path, students dive into the fundamentals of robotics and C++ programming, and also have the opportunity to create innovative projects based on the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT), taking responsibility for their own projects from start to finish.
Graphic Design
TUMO’s Graphic Design learning area focuses on the creation of visual elements, highlighting the role of shapes in visual communication. Its goal is to introduce students to the art of manipulating shapes to convey messages in an engaging and effective way.
Across the two levels of this learning path, students will create complex objects from simple shapes and deepen their knowledge of graphic design, including the use of grid-based design structures and the application of color in building a brand’s identity.
Photography
TUMO’s photography workshop focuses on the concept of photography as a powerful storytelling medium. Both levels of the workshop place a strong emphasis on the narrative potential of photographs, with a particular focus on their ability to convey meaning, intention, and emotional impact through storytelling. The workshop also aims to foster individual creativity by giving students the experience of developing their own personal vision and creative perspective.

Juan Mari Aburto
Mayor of Bilbao
“It is a STEAM education opportunity in the service of local talent development, to which all boys and girls in Bilbao between the ages of 12 and 18 will have equal access, free of charge. With easy access on foot, by bus, metro, or tram to Azkuna Zentroa, a hub that brings together a wide range of cultural, sports, and leisure offerings.”
Elixabete Etxanobe
General Deputy of Bizkaia
“For the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, it is especially important that a project like this is established in Bizkaia. The Council has been working for years together with companies, technology centers, universities, and other stakeholders to make Bizkaia a territory for talent. The Bizkaia with the Talent strategy is a combination of efforts reflected in different initiatives so that Bizkaia becomes a place where people can acquire and develop their full potential.”
Maria Espinet
Director of the Education Department at the “la Caixa” Foundation
“We are very excited to open the TUMO Bilbao-Bizkaia center and to welcome more than 1,000 students annually starting in the 2026–27 academic year. Our goal is to offer innovative and accessible education that promotes equal opportunities among adolescents in this community. With learning areas ranging from robotics to music, we are confident that our students will develop valuable skills for their academic and professional future.”
